Standing above Port Louis on a hill overlooking the capital, Fort Adelaide โ commonly known as La Citadelle โ is one of Mauritius' most recognisable historic fortifications.
Constructed by the British during the 19th century and completed in 1840, the fortress was designed as part of the defensive system protecting Port Louis.
Today, visitors come not only to discover its heavy basalt-stone architecture โ the thick defensive walls, stone arches and old cannons that reflect the military engineering of the British colonial period โ but also for the spectacular panoramic views from its elevated position.
