Le Morne Brabant rises dramatically from the southwestern tip of Mauritius, creating one of the island's most recognisable landscapes.
Standing 556 metres above the surrounding lagoon, this basalt mountain is much more than a spectacular natural landmark.
Le Morne Cultural Landscape is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its powerful connection with the history of slavery, maroonage and resistance in Mauritius.
During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the isolated mountain and its difficult terrain became associated with escaped enslaved people who sought refuge around Le Morne.
Surrounding the mountain is another side of Le Morne: turquoise lagoons, beaches, coral reefs and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Mauritius.
