Pereybere is a compact public beach on the northern coast, a few minutes up the road from Grand Baie and on the way to Cap Malheureux.
The bay is small and well sheltered, with rocky outcrops at either end holding the sand in place. The water is shallow a long way out and unusually clear, which is what draws people back.
Unlike the long empty stretches elsewhere on the island, Pereybere is a village beach: the road, the shops and the restaurants sit right behind the sand, so nothing is more than a short walk away.
It gets busy — with Mauritian families at weekends as much as with visitors — and that is much of its character. It is a sociable beach rather than a solitary one.
