Most waterfalls in Mauritius drop through dense green gorges. Rochester Falls does something different: it spreads sideways across a wall of basalt that has fractured into tall, squared columns, so the water falls in dozens of separate ribbons rather than a single plume.
That columnar structure is what draws people here. As the lava that formed this part of the island cooled, it contracted and cracked into regular vertical blocks — the same process that produced the famous organ-pipe formations elsewhere in the world, at a smaller and more intimate scale.
It sits in farmland just inland from Souillac, reached by a rough track through sugar cane. The falls themselves are modest in height, but the setting is green, rural and quiet, and the walk in takes only a few minutes.

The access track from the main road is rough, narrow and badly rutted in places. A high-clearance vehicle is a real advantage, and after heavy rain the track can become difficult. From the parking area it is a short walk of roughly ten minutes down to the falls.
You may be approached by people offering to guide you down or to demonstrate jumping from the rocks. There is no obligation to accept, and agreeing a price beforehand avoids misunderstandings.
